The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) Auxiliary is featuring the artwork of Deborah Sacks now through early January in the hospital’s main lobby hallway, 540 Litchfield St. in Torrington.
The public is invited to view and buy the works during regular visiting hours as part of the Auxiliary’s ongoing “Artist of the Month” program. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the artwork support the CHH Auxiliary and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Deborah has been an art student, artist, and art teacher all of her adult life. An Avon resident since 1982, she is now retired from a long career in the Windsor Public Schools and the Gilbert School in Winsted. She also conducts classes that give senior citizens the pleasures of art.
Her current work builds upon her years of intaglio and relief printing from metal, wood and linoleum plates. Switching to more environmentally friendly techniques, she uses solar plates and water based inks to produce results comparable to acid etching. Deborah also combines her original painting, drawings, etching and photographs within a digital print. The prints are on a variety of archival papers to which she often applies further enhancement with pastel and paint.
Deborah completed a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, an MA from Towson State University, and a MALS from Wesleyan University. Her award-winning prints have appeared at the Gallery on the Green in Canton, Farmington Valley Art Center in Avon and the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, N.H.
The Charlotte Hospital Auxiliary consists of 200 members and 25 board members. These special people give their support and time throughout the year by raising money through the operation of the CHH gift shop, membership dues, special vendor sales, an annual fashion show, the Artist of the Month Program and a holiday season’s greeting promotion.
The Auxiliary supports many functions including donations to the hospital’s annual women’s heart health program, and volunteer tea, cancer fundraisers and capital campaigns. The Auxiliary also awards annual $1,000 healthcare scholarships, including the Dr. Alfred Febro Scholarship and one in memory of Joseph Curi, MD.
